The Danes know a thing or two about pastries, so
a good breakfast was guaranteed on the first day
of the Nordic Challenge. Once the crews had taken
their leave of the generous buffet, they turned their
attention to the starting arch on the waterfront.
Loren Price did the honours of waving the cars away from
the start line, as the roadbook led us smartly through
Copenhagen, and its rush-hour cyclists, towards the
Øresund bridge. At the Swedish frontier it was on to a full
day of rallying with three Tests and three Regularities.
Within 40km of coming ashore, and clearing the ever-sosimple border, a mid-morning visit to the Sturup Raceway
opened the competition with two tarmac Tests. Then there
was a moment for crews to catch their breath at the Time
Control in the main circuit building.
The countryside today was stunning, and a network of
little-used minor roads with a Route Check in Löberöd,
made for a very agreeable ride to the first Regularity,
which ran from Bosarp. This was our first section of gravel,
serving as a perfect introduction to a surface unfamiliar to
Neil Smith and Mike McCollum, 1969 Porsche 911
