With an extra hour on our body clock from the
crossing from Finland the Organisers decided, with
20 hours of daylight to play with, that today was a
good day to stretch the daily total to 526.5km.
The longest day of the Nordic Challenge involved three
Tests, three Time Controls, and three Regularities to fill it,
along a route which rose steadily from breakfast at sea level
to dinner at 730m.
From Umeå the route headed south and west. After a
mere 13km it brought us to the Bussjö Motorstadion Test
for two laps of questionable tarmac and exhilarating gravel.
Whilst most crews enjoyed themselves immensely over this
rough and ready track, Nigel and Sally Woof’s Volvo came to
a shuddering halt shortly after the start line. It was towed
out of the section by an organiser’s Hilux and Andy Inskip
and Peter Banham set to work on the differential mountings.
Meanwhile, the rest of the rally made its way to the Byviken
Regularity and on to the halfway point of the event.
