any of us will have visited France and passed through on route to other
European destinations. However, many will also say that they have never
ventured into Brittany, where evidence of its Celtic traditions include playing
the bagpipes and wearing tartan. Brittany was the “Little Britain” of King Arthur’s realm,
Petite Bretagne as opposed to Grande Bretagne. That otherworldly element still seems
entrenched in the land and people, particularly apparent inland where the moors,
woodlands and forests of Huelgoat and Paimpont are identified with the tales of Merlin,
the Fisher King and the Holy Grail.
With its wild Atlantic coastline, outstanding
scenery, quiet back-roads and quaint
villages and towns, Brittany offers a wealth
of hidden opportunities waiting to be
discovered. Among some of the visual
highlights you may expect to visit are the
Côte de Granit Rose, the Standing Stones of
Carnac and Pont-Aven, home to the Gaugin
school of art. This often overlooked corner
of France also boasts a rich cuisine based on
seafood extravaganzas encountered in its
many coastal bistrôts and restaurants.
