A lot of work that goes into putting together an event like this, much
of which is behind the scenes before, during and even afterwards!
• Fred Gallagher: you all know fred, responsible for the
route and the recces, involving many hours poring over
maps at his dining room table. likes red wine.
• Mark Appleton: Clerk of the Course, but also so much
more. Spends many hours on every event shut away in
an office whilst you’re all enjoying your evening meal,
making sure the bulletin is accurate, the results have
been treble checked, and that the rest of the team all
know their responsibilities for the next day. Is most upset
when he misses dessert.
• Loren Price: professional herder of cats…! Always
available to answer the most important questions such
as where is the bar and what time is dinner at the same
time as juggling rooming lists, dinner menus, tomorrow’s
lunch timings and countless other details. Beware when
she gets hangry…
• Kitty Burdett: you probably only know Kitty via email,
but she’s the one who makes sure you have all the
information you need, arranges many of the lunches,
coffee stops and tests along the route, and keeps the
office running whilst we are away.
• Helen Oates: Rally the Globe’s amazingly efficient finance
director, making sure everywhere we visit has already
been paid for their services, and that the team get their
expenses paid!
• Sarah Ormerod: medic support on a number of our
events, but heavily involved in putting together the details
of the route, finding lots of the interesting refreshment
stops and test venues, and generally bringing a smile and
enthusiasm to proceedings.
• Gill & John Cotton: stalwarts of our team, expert marshals
and with Gill’s extra responsibility for collating the many
results each day to make sure these are published in time
for you all to rejoice in (or otherwise!) at dinner each night.
• Jim Smith: making sure that all the marshal teams are
kitted out, fitting too many cars into too small a space,
and providing entertainment for the team when his sat
nav occasionally takes him the wrong way…
• Dr John Llewellyn: an encyclopaedic knowledge on
anything and everything, with a penchant for sarcasm
when he’s not providing the team with facts on the
ancient history of Mexico.
• Dick Appleton & Paul Heal: drive the lonely road of
the Advance Car, giving the team the chance to iron out
any last minute issues before you set out each morning.
Most worried when they run out of whisky to keep them
company in their isolation.
• Iain Tullie & Chris Mills: Iain’s calm efficient manner
makes him one of the best Competitor liaison officers,
and Chris’s dry humour and laid back manner brings a
much needed calm to all proceedings.
• David Harris: keeping track of you every minute of the
day, making sure we knew where you were and if we
needed to send help. don’t let him near the margheritas.
• our incredible mechanics team: Andy Inskip, Charlie
Neale, Russ Smith, Jamie Turner, Jack Amies & Owen
Turner. If you don’t know these guys, you’re one of the
lucky ones who didn’t need their assistance!
• our talented media team: with Gerard Brown & Marcus
Rowe as photographers and providing content for the
daily rally reports, and Chris Brown, Ryan Hallett &
Marcus Jones on filming duties, you get to look back on
fond memories long after the dust settles.
• Karen Leahy, Ben Wood & Gill Marcucci: these are our
amazing support team who make sure the website is
updated each day, put together this Daily Dispatch, post
all our films and photos on social media and make all our
printed and online material look so good!
And a few other people we need to thank….
• our sponsors RM Sotheby’s: for all their support as one
of our key partners
• Ruby Briggs, north America Travel Service: arranged all
of our hotels, provided advice and contacts, and made
this a lot easier than it would have been otherwise!
• Damian Kirov: puts all of the recce drawings, notes and
scribbles into the polished road Books you receive, and
helps with new tulips at short notice for bulletins during
the event. And all the way from Bulgaria!
• Bobby Willis: puts together the stylish Map Books you
get to keep as a memento
• Christian Hudon: catered the amazing taco buffet with
live music in San felipe, helped source the bespoke
finisher’s rally plates, and acted as translator with some
of our lunch venues.
• Jenny Bertin: for providing advice on safety and medical
issues in Mexico, as well as suggestions for our awards.
• Involution: our UK supplier who provided the very stylish
checked shirts you all looked so good in.
• Trofeos Lobos: arranged the incredibly detailed beaded
awards for the prize-giving.
• Venues: we couldn’t do this without all the hotels,
cafes, restaurants, test venues and everywhere else who
welcomed us so warmly when we visited on route!
The Alaska to Mexico Marathon would not have been the
same without every single person involved, so a massive
thank you to everyone who was a part of this adventure!
