look at Britain’s highest pub, the Tan Hill Inn, before
delivering the rally to the Time Control at Simonstone Hall
for an excellent alfresco lunch - with views to die for.
Although the crews had earned this rest over the
morning, the pace really picked up in the afternoon with
an extended visit to the wilds of the Catterick Army camp,
where a mixture of fast, loose Regularities and Tests gave
everyone something to smile about. Even Philip and Patricia
Monks, whose Jaguar enjoyed a short lived excursion into a
ditch. They were swiftly pulled back onto the course by the
ever capable sweep crew of Andy Inskip and Jack Amies.
After leaving the firing range and tank training grounds
the trajectory was seemingly a homeward one but, the
Organisers weren’t offering an armchair ride to the bar. In
fact, the last few sections were perhaps the most tricky of
the whole day thanks in no small part to the lush Yorkshire
greensward which many of us had been admiring from the
security of the tarmac.
No matter how the crews had performed over the rest
of this challenging day, the final short excursion across
a steep section of fresh pasture, really shook things up
with Stephen Hardwick and Gavin Henderson among those
giving bravura displays of pirouettes, slides and spins,
much to the delight of those watching and tucking into
delicious local ice cream.
Once the clutches had cooled and the excuses had been
made though, it was a mere two miles before we pulled into
the Yorke Arms once more for a BBQ dinner and a traditional
Yorkshire “welly wanging” contest in the grounds.
