Day 3
Ramsgill - Ramsgill via Whitby (210 miles)
13 June 2021
Obviously, no-one had told Mark Appleton that Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest, as he’d scheduled
the longest day of the rally so far. But, on the other hand he had also fitted in a visit to Ampleforth
Abbey, where the crews were given just enough time to nip in to take in the sermon. And perhaps also
to offer thanks for the incredible weather which God’s own county was about to serve up once again.
The results of last night’s welly wanging contest came in
too late for the first edition but we can report that, despite
carrying a back injury, Stephen Hardwick was declared the
winner whilst Ian Milne took the wooden spoon - for a shot
that didn’t even make it over the line.
This morning however, after leaving the Yorke Arms
and weaving alongside the Gouthwaite Reservoir, the first
obstacle which the crews had to negotiate was the Aldwark
toll bridge where, the princely sum of 40p got them safely
over the River Ure, into the first Regularity at Bogg Hall and
then Time Control and coffee halt in the grounds of the
aforementioned Ampleforth Abbey.
The rest of the morning was given over to heading
eastwards, towards the coast. Up and over the impressive
expanse of the North York Moors, taking in the brutal
climbs of Kirkbymoorside and Rosedale Chimney. The two
Regularities along the route demanded a certain level of
concentration but, many found it hard to keep their eyes on
the map book whilst travelling through such an impressive
landscape. Five fords were also tackled over these two
sections and everyone of them was bone dry.
Once again the crews had earned their lunch and, with
something of a holiday atmosphere in the air they parked
their cars at the Sandsend Fish Cottage Restaurant near
Whitby. Only a stones throw from the golden sands, it was
an ideal spot to unwind and prepare for what looked to be
a fairly hectic afternoon, based around the Oliver’s Mount
complex in Scarborough.
