Day 13 Chiang Mai to Nan (365km)

appleton, today we enjoyed a perfect endurance
rally symphony, with virtuoso performances
from 25 roaring engines, 100 squealing tyres, an
orchestra of birdsong and a chorus of insect life.
Best described as a pastoral symphony, the day’s
route had something for everyone with a test and
four very different regularities to shake up the
leaderboard.
the timing started within an hour of finishing breakfast
with a blast around the car park of the Chiang mai stadium.
Built for the 1995 south east asian games, and now the
9 February 2024
home of Chiang mai FC, the management handed us the
keys to the turnstiles for our very own match of the day.
getting out of this busy city was much easier than getting
in so, soon after the final whistle, we found ourselves at
the start of an amazing section with three regularities
run in quick succession. in 41km we climbed to well over
1500m through a cool and leafy jungle with great tarmac
and almost no other traffic. there were some very steep
hairpins and, with the clock ticking, some of the older and
heavier cars struggled to maintain their momentum and
keep to the schedule.
Between the doi saket, Koi hin and lychee viewpoint
regularities, the road gave us some tantalising glimpses
of a vast wooded landscape and led us through some
charming villages. once the regularities had been dealt
