Our second crossing of Hokkaido, this time from
the Pacific to the Sea of Japan, was a very wet one.
In a reprise of our time at Akankohan, today was
the second time we’d woken up next to a lake, and
the second time we’d woken up to a downpour of
biblical proportions.

Thankfully, the open cars had been allowed to park under
a canopy overnight but, whilst they might have started the
day relatively dry, once they’d left the MTC, Tricia Field and
Susan Godfrey had no weather protection save for their
oilskins and took the full fury of the rain right until the
lunch halt.
The day’s first Regularity, alongside the Toyoizumi
River, was a busy map-based section with 10 junctions in
10km, through a forest of Japanese Knotweed. Torrents of
rainwater cascaded down the many steep hairpins, causing
several cars to scrabble for grip.
The next Regularity, the so-called Down to the Seas
Again, was quite appropriately, just as wet as the previous
