One of the many stretches of rough tarmac and rockfalls
gave rise to a puncture for Otakar and Otakar Jr Chládek’s
1971, Mercedes-Benz. The competent crew soon had the
rubber replaced and rolled into the next Time Control at the
Ueno Road Station for a coffee break. The final Regularity,
Tunnel Vision, was along a section of road that led through
some of the many subterranean passages cutting through
this region. After which we set a course for the night halt
in the Prince Hotel, Karuizawa.
A fashionable retreat from Tokyo, the Emperor Akihito
met the future Empress Michiko on a tennis court in
Karuizawa, while John Lennon and Yoko Ono spent time
at her family’s summer house in the area. The town is also
famous for its golf courses and shopping malls - an ideal
place for us to spend our second rest day with plenty of
distractions and amusements.
