Given that we’re in the land of the rising sun, we’ve
seen a lot of the falling rain, and, as the crews
busied themselves with the all-important rest day
maintenance tasks, the weather took a turn for the
worse.
Those braving the showers included David Roberts, who was
under his Chrysler diligently greasing his prop shaft and
mopping up a small oil spill from the boot. Andy Inskip set
to repairing a puncture they’d picked up earlier in the week.
Bob Harrod’s Porsche 911 was having its usual rest day
check over, with tyres, wheel nuts and fluids all coming
under his expert eye. Mike Harrison was making sure
his Volvo, like the Porsche, would find the next week as
trouble-free as the last.
Richard Phillipson’s Mini had brake trouble yesterday, so
he, and Russ Smith, were busy shaping some spacers to
take up the play in the front wheel assembly. Once they’d
cracked this particular nut, Catherine arrived with a bucket
of soapy water to give the pocket rocket a bit of a wash and
brush up.
Ivan Pusnik and Charlie Neale were also on brake duty,
busy with the 1936 Ford, paying attention to the front
brakes which, strangely, are getting better as the event
progresses. Ivan feels that they’re snatching a little, so this
was a good opportunity to see what was going on and to
make whatever adjustments were necessary.
Richard Clark and Jonathan Round’s Ford bucked the
trend of brake issues, with a dodgy connection to its electric
fan that needed replacing. Whilst the crew looked on, Owen
Turner set to with his crimpers to fix the problem.
With the cars sorted, there was time for some rest
and recreation and, as Tokyo was only an hour away
on the Shinkansen, a trip to the capital city was not an
unreasonable way to while away the afternoon.
