Today, the Islands of Japan Marathon tipped over
the halfway point and enjoyed another actionpacked session. A heady mixture of zoology and
Zen, courtesy of the famous snow monkeys of
Jigokudani Yaen-Koen and a Shinto priest at the
Kosuge Shrine, where there was an opportunity to
try some Taiko drumming.
The day began with a map-based Regularity through the
Haneo cabbage farms on a slippy, greasy, tranche of tarmac.
Dappled light and many changes of direction caught one or
two of the crews off guard over this 7km section.
Sulphurous odours led us towards a Passage Control
atop the 2182m Shiga-Kusatsu Kogen, where a very chilly
breeze discouraged loitering, despite the amazing views
from Japan’s highest public thoroughfare.
