digest the lunch provided by the visitors’ centre. Richard
Clark and Jonathan Round’s big Ford needed some
attention for a mysterious misfire, which kept Andy Inskip
from his noodles for a short while. Richard and Catherine
Phillipson’s Little Mini also had its bonnet open, with Owen
Turner putting his ramen to one side to look at the timing.
There wasn’t much left in the Road Book, save for a short
run to the day’s end at the Shimoda Prince Hotel. Sitting
on a beach, populated by surfers and swimmers, proved
irresistible to several crews, who were tempted into taking
a quick dip before dinner
Whilst the sweeps had been delayed at lunch, Nigel
Woof and “stand-in sweep”, John Cotton, were late for
dinner thanks to an appointment with a garage to repair
a damaged drive shaft. Luckily, Datsun 240Zs were once
common in these parts, and the required spares and local
expertise were easy to come by.
