Day 20 Kyoto Rest Day
8 October 2025
The third rest day of the rally saw us hunkered
down in Kyoto, the onetime capital of Japan, and
there was much to see and do in this ancient city,
which served up everything from fine dining to a
feast of culture.
The underground car park saw some crews engaged in
a bit of light spannering and feeling grateful for the air
conditioning - the 34°c on the street was too hot for some.
Away from the cars, with a little help from our Into Japan
fixers, we were able to visit giant bamboo plantations, Zen
gardens, Buddhist and Shinto temples and former palaces.
Japan’s capital for more than 1,000 years, Kyoto was the
centre of politics, religion, philosophy, art, culture and
cuisine, and is still considered the cultural capital of Japan.
Real Geisha girls were a bit thin on the ground today,
however. Still, the kimono rental shops were doing a brisk
trade in makeovers and costumes for those tourists keen to
experience a little bit of Geiko magic. At some of the main
attractions, the forest of selfie-sticks was as thick as the real
woodland we’ve driven through so far.
