Today was a transit day with no competition,
other than the personal satisfaction of getting
to Tokuyama Port and grabbing one of the bento
boxes before settling into the two-hour cruise to
Takedatsu.
After a flat, calm crossing under a broiling sun, the New
Kunisaki finally opened her doors and disgorged her
precious cargo onto near-tropical Kyushu, the last island in
our journey, and famed for its bamboo-based handicrafts
and onsen.
From the port an easy highway passage, through a lush
jungle landscape, led us to the Grand Mercure in Beppu Bay,
where Dick Appleton and Owen Turner, of 48-hour car fame,
were waiting for us.
