Day 2
Asahikawa to Akankohan (326km)
20 September 2025
An early start was called for this morning as the Organisers had crammed in a very full schedule with
no less than five Regularities before the day’s end through some of the most remote parts of Hokkaido.
Asahikawa, the gateway to the Daisetsuzan National Park, is the second largest city in Hokkaido, and claims to be Japan’s
coldest city. So, this morning we enjoyed a chilly, but easy, 65km run to the Black Mountain Coffee Time Control, where
the rally regrouped before setting off into the Park for the first Regularity along Highway 47. Gravel greeted us through
this narrow, steep, overgrown section, along the ‘old road’ below the 2,290m bulk of Asahi-dake, the region’s highest peak.
The lush foliage was just beginning to take on its autumn hue.
