Day 3: Akankohan to Shiretoko, 21 September 2025
The day ended with lunch at the Road Station Abashiri
overlooking a very tempestuous Sea of Okhotsk.
Following this tough morning, two crews needed some
help from the sweep teams before they could sit down
and enjoy the view. The mounts for the original wing of
Michael Lutolf and Patt Henderson’s 1947 Citroen 11B
succumbed to metal fatigue on the road to Abashiri. The
front end had to be temporarily, but expertly, shored up
by Andy Inskip and Charlie Neale at the roadside, who
will look at a more permanent repair tomorrow. Ales and
Jana Koci’s 1972 BMW 3.0 CSi, on the other hand, was
found to have a fuel pump problem - once diagnosed, it
was an easy fix.
Lunch finished, the crews embarked on a windy, wet
and wild 75km voyage along the coast to the Kitakobushi
Shiretoko Resort, where we will spend our first rest day.
