Time Control coffee halt in Chillingham Castle, the most
haunted in Britain! But the morning was far from over
and, upon leaving the realm of the ghosts and ghouls,
the rally was faced with a stiff climb up to the Hepburn
Moor Regularity. The navigators were once again faced
with something of a challenge over fourteen difficult miles
with many intermediate timing points and several speed
changes to contend with.
From here the route took an easterly turn towards the
mighty castle at Bamburgh and a Passage Control on the
coast road as the Rally headed into the second Test at Rock
Midstead. This agricultural facility punched well above its
weight in terms of driver satisfaction and crowd pleasing
action as the cars threaded their way through giant tanks
of fertiliser and neatly stacked pallets - with a few cones
and a couple of blind corners thrown in for good measure.
The crews had definitely earned their lunch and
thankfully it was close at hand in Alnwick Garden - nestled
under the shadow of Hogwarts. After lunch the tempo
was just as brisk and a Test at Causey Park led the crews
into yet another water crossing before they slithered out
from the cones and rejoined the tarmac and the road to
Angerton for a map based Regularity via a Route Check at
Brainshaugh.
Here the marshalling effort really moved into Generations
Rally top gear as Ali Procter had set up a control along with
his two young daughters, their grandfather and a big box
of sweets for crews needing a quick sugar fix. Once clear
of Angerton the route turned towards Slaley Hall with only
a Passage Control at New Ridley and the final, very wet,
Regularity up Kiln Pit Hill to deal with. The lanterns of the
driveway once again led the crews home to another night
section where it became apparent that some weren’t quite
as tired as they thought they were.
