Finally, the numbers came good and it was the 1974 Ford
Escort of Paul Taylor and Sophie Haslam who took the
Classic category win. Sophie, the Escort’s navigator, was
delighted - if a little surprised as this was her very first
event… but possibly not her last. “i think i’ve benefited
from a huge dose of beginner’s luck” she said modestly
before adding “and the three stopwatches on the dashboard
really helped.”
Driver Paul added “usually i navigate with her father…
well, i’m afraid he might have just lost his job! Seriously
though, this has been a brilliant event and i can’t believe
we’ve done so well, thanks to everyone”.
Michael Birch and Emily Anderson on the other hand
are more experienced at this rallying game. As they rolled
their striking green Talbot into first place in the Pre-War
Category and popped the champagne corks, they were also
very pleased with themselves, but were generous enough
to pay tribute to their fellow competitors, and thanked the
organisers for a fabulous event. Last minute crew changes
had put Michael’s participation in doubt but luckily “it all
worked out in the end”.
As well as the overall and class awards there were a
couple of discretionary prizes. The Spirit of the Rally award
went to Alan and Edward Stansfield with their 1983 Ford
