The road to the Garryvoe Beach Passage Control on
Ballycotton Bay gave the rally something of a laid back,
holiday feel before the last blast to the finishing line and
the final Test. The honour of hosting this last competitive
section went to the Castlemartyr Resort itself. More used
to dealing with the gentle hum of electric golf buggies,
today became every green keepers nightmare. A section of
the perimeter road was given over to a very different sort
of driver, watched by a crowd that had formed along the
straight in front of the hotel. A couple of sharp turns and
a stop box were all that separated the cars from the finish
line and a well earned pint of Guinness.
There was just time for a quick wash and brush up before
the evening began with pre-dinner drinks and a sit down
meal ahead of the silverware distribution. Fred Gallagher,
Mickey Gabbett, Michael Jackson and Mark Appleton took
charge of the ceremony and thanked the sponsors, Chubb
and Barrett Private Insurances for their generous and
continued support, the crews for their commitment to the
event and everyone who’d made it possible.
