Tony Brooks added that they make a great team. “Jim is
a really good driver who can hold his speed precisely, he
pays attention to what I’m saying and it’s nice to have a
driver who listens and reacts accordingly”.
Overall and class awards distributed it was time for
the discretionary trophies. Thomas Houlihan and Edel
Murphy, the crew of the 1937 Riley Special, took the Spirit
of the Rally, for services to drifting and sliding and smiling
all of the way though. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Heyer and
Martin Hunter, the crew of the Salmson VAL3 Grand Sport,
battled every day with their delightful, but unpredictable
old car, earning them the Against all Odds trophy.
Jim Boland and Neil Sutton, 1937 BMW 328
Jim Gately and Tony Brooks, who’d taken the overall win,
were obviously thrilled and, once the trophy was safely
in his hands, Jim was full of praise for both the route, his
navigator and the Organisation.
As for the car, a unique and rare design, he said that yes
“it’s like driving a boat, it goes all over the road and it’s
deceptively long, it looks much shorter than it is. We have a
good power to weight ratio though thanks to an aluminium
body and a Ford flathead V8 engine. Why do I think we won?
Absolutely, positively, sheer luck! It was such a close run
result and we didn’t think that we’d won until just about
the last Regularity. We had a bad morning and I thought that
we’d dropped off the podium but some of the other crews
had their own problems to deal with as well.”
Overall winners, Jim Gately and Tony Brooks, 1947 Kurtis Comet
