enjoyed plates of hearty Irish stew
and mashed potato with a selection of
cakes and a choice of either dining al
fresco or settling in to any one of the
well furnished sitting rooms.
A busy afternoon took us almost
immediately to a quick Test around the
grounds of Gurteen Castle, preceding a
much anticipated map based Regularity
through the Comeraghs. This was
a Regularity with a twist, where the
crews had to plot a route to a pub via
a series of minor roads and specified
bridges. They then had 15 minutes
and 27 seconds to purchase and
consume whatever refreshment they
desired before making the necessary
adjustments to their speed tables,
resuming the route and making their
way to the end of the Regularity and
on to the next Time Control at Crough
- nestled below the Mahon Falls.
From here the cars began climbing
towards the Passage Control atop the
Monavullagh Mountains. At this lofty
viewpoint the plan for the rest of the
day was a little clearer - all downhill
via two Regularities. One along the
Colligan River and another over the
Drum Hills from Dungarvan before the
gates of Castlemartyr loomed large,
signalling both the day’s end and the
beginning of what was likely to be
another very enjoyable night section.
